Round-up

Best BambooHR alternatives (2026): tested picks by use case

The best BambooHR alternative depends on which module you lean on. For US payroll and core HR, Gusto is the tested pick; for global teams, Deel; for hiring, Breezy HR or Manatal. Factor in BambooHR's US-only payroll and its $250/month flat rate at 25 employees or fewer before you renew.

The best BambooHR alternatives by use case

The best BambooHR alternative depends on which module you actually lean on. For US payroll and core HR, Gusto is the tested pick. For a global or non-US team, Deel solves the problem BambooHR’s US-only payroll can’t (see Deel’s plans). If you mostly bought BambooHR for hiring, Breezy HR and Manatal are stronger at that one job for less money. BambooHR is a fine HR system; it just isn’t the right shape for every team that buys it. And before you switch at all, check its own pricing page: the $250/month flat rate at 25 employees or fewer is the number that decides whether leaving is worth it.

This round-up leads with the four tools I’ve tested hands-on (each with its own scored review), then names the shortlist I haven’t tested, flagged clearly with no invented scores.

Why teams leave BambooHR

BambooHR is a cloud HRIS for small and mid-size businesses: employee records, hiring and onboarding, reporting and performance, with payroll, benefits and time tracking sold as add-ons. The complaints that push teams off it are consistent across independent review platforms, and they cluster around four themes: payroll depth, reporting ceilings, cost creep and geography.

  • Payroll depth. Software Advice’s summary of 3,460 verified reviews (4.6/5 overall, so this is a liked product) notes that payroll “often requires manual work due to limited built-in features”.
  • Reporting ceilings. The same summary describes reporting as “basic and lacking customization” and the platform as inflexible for complex workflows, with reviewers adding it isn’t the best fit for larger businesses.
  • Cost creep. GetApp’s review summary flags that costs rise quickly with growth, points at expensive add-ons, and calls out limited pricing transparency.
  • Geography. BambooHR’s native payroll is US-only: it “is designed to pay US-based employees” with US tax filing, per BambooHR’s own payroll page. Non-US staff mean local payroll integrations (UK, Australia, New Zealand), marketplace partners, or its global employment (EOR) add-on.

None of that makes BambooHR a bad product. But the further your team drifts from “US-based, HR-records-first”, the better an alternative built for your actual job will fit. To be fair, BambooHR is closing some of these gaps: in March 2026 it launched BambooHR Services, starting with Managed Payroll (press release). If hands-on payroll help was your only complaint, that may be reason to stay.

What BambooHR actually costs in 2026

BambooHR costs $10 (Core), $17 (Pro) or $25 (Elite) per employee per month, with a flat rate from $250/month at 25 employees or fewer, and payroll, benefits and time tracking sold as add-ons. The figures come from BambooHR’s pricing page, checked 12 July 2026. More than one ranking round-up claims BambooHR doesn’t publish its prices; it does.

BambooHR planPrice (per employee/mo)What it adds
Core$10HR records, hiring & onboarding, reporting
Pro$17Performance management, employee community
Elite$25Compensation management, advanced analytics
25 employees or fewerflat rate from $250/moReplaces per-seat pricing for small teams
Add-onspriced separatelyPayroll (US-only), benefits admin, time & attendance, global employment (EOR)

Two traps hide in that table. First, the small-team flat rate: at 25 employees or fewer you pay a flat rate starting at $250/month, so a 10-person team is effectively at $25 per person before a single add-on. Second, the add-on structure: payroll, benefits administration and time tracking all sit outside the headline tiers, which is exactly the “costs rise quickly” pattern reviewers describe. A 15% bundle discount applies when you combine the payroll and benefits add-ons (US-based employees only), and non-profits get 15% off.

If those two lines describe your bill, the alternatives below are where the same money buys a better fit.

Who should stay on BambooHR

Stay if you’re an HR-records-first US team that finds the all-in-one suites oversized. That’s a real buyer, not a hypothetical: one Senior Director of Talent Management chose BambooHR over Rippling and Paylocity precisely because “the other platforms were more than we needed” (Capterra). If BambooHR’s core HRIS is the part you actually use (records, onboarding, reporting), your team is US-based, and you don’t want to pay for payroll-plus-IT you’ll never touch, the flat $250 at 25-and-under can be fair value, and the March 2026 Managed Payroll launch closes the most-cited gap. The alternatives below are for the teams the four complaints above genuinely describe: payroll-deep, reporting-hungry, cost-squeezed or non-US.

How I chose these

I only hand out a score after testing a tool with my own account, so this list splits in two. Gusto, Deel, Breezy HR and Manatal carry real tested verdicts from their own reviews. Rippling, HiBob and Zoho People are credible candidates I haven’t tested, so they appear with no score and no invented pricing. Affiliate links are disclosed above this content and never change where a tool ranks; one tested pick, Gusto, carries no affiliate relationship at all, and its verdict sits ahead of two that do.

Pick by the job you hired BambooHR for

BambooHR bundles HR records, hiring, onboarding and (US) payroll. Most teams that leave are really replacing one of those jobs, not all of them.

US payroll and core HR → Gusto

If the honest reason you run BambooHR is “keep records and pay people correctly”, and your team is US-based, Gusto does that job with less system around it. Payroll is the product, not an add-on: full-service runs, hiring documents, self-onboarding and benefits in one flow. And if you want to pressure-test that pick before you commit, the Gusto alternatives shortlist shows what I’d choose instead for each exit reason.

Tested (Jul 2026): 8/10. Transparent pricing from $49/mo + $6/person (Simple). Strong employee self-onboarding; the weak spots are support and HR features that turn into paid add-ons. US-only for employee payroll. Full detail in the Gusto review. No affiliate relationship, which changes nothing about the verdict.

Gusto payroll setup timeline from the tested account: an eight-step checklist from company profile (completed) through tax details, bank account and document signing to running your first payroll, each step showing a time estimate

A UK team can’t use Gusto at all. PayFit and CharlieHR are the names that come up for UK payroll and light HR; I haven’t tested either, so no scores here.

A global or non-US team → Deel

BambooHR’s payroll stops at the US border; Deel starts there. It runs global payroll and contractor payments across 150+ countries, with employer-of-record hiring through Deel’s own legal entities in 130+ of them, and an HR layer on top, so a distributed team gets one system instead of a US HRIS plus a patchwork.

Tested (Jul 2026): 8/10. I set up a real account and posted a live job through Deel’s recruiting flow. Deel HR runs from $14/worker/mo (list price; the fuller HRIS is quote-gated) and EOR from $599/employee/mo. The catch: the EOR fee is a platform fee, and the real cost adds salary, employer taxes and an FX spread. Full detail in the Deel review. → See Deel

Hiring first → Breezy HR or Manatal

If BambooHR’s ATS was the module you actually used, a dedicated recruiting tool is stronger at that one job for less.

Breezy HR is the closest thing to a hiring pipeline a non-recruiter can run: a visual Kanban board, a genuinely free plan, and one-click posting to 50+ job boards.

Tested (Jul 2026): 9/10. Free Bootstrap plan for one active position; the first paid tier, Startup, is $189/mo flat ($157 billed annually) with unlimited positions. AI scoring and the API are paid extras. Full detail in the Breezy HR review. → See Breezy HR

Manatal adds AI candidate scoring and a recruitment CRM at an SMB price; it’s the pick when sourcing help matters as much as tracking.

Tested (Jul 2026): 9/10. From $19/user/mo ($15 billed annually) on Professional. Transparent AI scoring; automation and the API are gated to upper plans. Full detail in the Manatal review. → See Manatal

Hiring only, and choosing between more ATS options? In-house teams should start from the best ATS software round-up; recruiting and staffing agencies have their own agency ATS shortlist.

Still on my list to test

Three tools earn their place on shortlists I trust, but I haven’t run them myself, so they carry no score and I won’t quote prices I haven’t verified on their own pages.

Rippling

The “one system for HR, payroll and IT” pitch: employee records driving app access and device management as well as pay. The usual candidate when IT provisioning is part of why you’re switching; it also has its own decision page here, the Rippling alternatives shortlist, which maps the exits in the other direction.

HiBob

An HRIS aimed at culture-led, mid-size teams; it shows up on most alternative lists (including its own, which is worth reading with that in mind).

Zoho People

The budget route, with a free plan for up to five users (three on Zoho’s US pricing page) and a 30-day trial above it; strongest if you already live in the Zoho suite.

Beyond those three: ADP Run and Paychex are the payroll heavyweights you’ll see on longer lists; both sell on quotes rather than published prices, a model the tested Paychex alternatives shortlist unpacks with dated captures. Sage HR and Personio are the UK- and EU-leaning HRIS names. All four are untested here, so they stay unscored mentions.

How to switch off BambooHR without losing data

The move is unremarkable if you sequence it around your renewal date.

  1. Find your renewal date first. The flat-rate and per-seat billing both renew on a schedule; time the cutover so you’re not paying for an overlap year.
  2. Export while you still can. Pull employee records, documents and reports out of BambooHR while the subscription is active. Attachments and historical audit logs are the usual casualties, so check those explicitly rather than assuming.
  3. Map the add-ons you used. Payroll, benefits, time tracking: each one needs a named home in the new stack before you cancel, or it becomes a spreadsheet.
  4. Run one cycle in parallel. Keep BambooHR read-only through one full payroll (or hiring) cycle while the new system goes live. If you’re also decommissioning a sunset ATS, the same playbook applies as in the Freshteam alternatives guide.

Which alternative should you choose?

Match the tool to the job you hired BambooHR for: US payroll and core HR points to Gusto, a global team to Deel, and hiring to Breezy HR or Manatal. If no single job dominates, and the small-team flat rate isn’t biting you, staying put is a legitimate answer too, especially with BambooHR now adding managed payroll services.

For where HR tooling like this sits in a wider automated stack, see the HR tasks worth automating.

FAQ

How much does BambooHR cost?

BambooHR publishes its prices: Core is $10, Pro is $17 and Elite is $25 per employee per month, with payroll, benefits administration, time tracking and global employment sold as add-ons on top. At 25 employees or fewer it switches to a monthly flat rate starting at $250. Figures checked on BambooHR's pricing page in July 2026.

Does BambooHR do payroll?

Yes, but its native payroll pays US-based employees only, with US federal, state and local tax filing. For staff outside the US, BambooHR points you to local payroll integrations in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, marketplace partners, or its global employment (EOR) add-on. Teams with most people abroad usually do better on a global-first platform.

Is BambooHR good for small businesses?

It can be, but run the maths first. At 25 employees or fewer BambooHR charges a flat rate starting at $250 a month, so a 10-person team is effectively paying $25 per person before any add-ons. Purpose-built small-team tools cover HR records plus payroll for less, which is why the flat rate is the first thing to check.

What is the difference between BambooHR and Gusto?

BambooHR is an HR system first: records, reporting, hiring and onboarding, with US payroll as an add-on. Gusto is payroll first: full-service US payroll with hiring documents, self-onboarding and benefits around it. A US team whose real job is paying people accurately tends to fit Gusto; a team centred on HR data and processes fits BambooHR's shape.

What is the best free alternative to BambooHR?

Zoho People has a free plan for up to five users (three on its US pricing page), which makes it the practical free starting point for a very small team; paid tiers and a 30-day trial sit above it. Free HR tools cap out quickly on reporting and integrations, so treat free as a starting point rather than a destination.

Can I switch from BambooHR without losing my data?

Yes, if you sequence it. Export your employee records, documents and reports while your subscription is still active, check your renewal date so you're not paying for an overlap year, and run the old and new systems in parallel for one payroll cycle before switching off. Attachments and historical logs are the usual casualties, so verify those first.

Who's behind this

Real experience, tested in public

I’ve run structured hiring end to end: writing the role, screening with an ATS, two-stage interviews, and a graduate-intake program for a large organization. I also designed the onboarding automation that fired the moment a candidate was marked Hired, covering contract, IT and account provisioning, the first-week plan, the welcome, and the feedback loop. Here I rebuild those same flows in the affordable tools a small team can actually run, and document what I built, what broke, and what it saved. Everything is tested with my own accounts, no sponsorships.
